Michael’s fundraising triathlon for CAFOD’s work in Syria – part II

You may remember our July post about Michael’s fundraising initiative in favour of CAFODS’ Syria Appeal.  On the 3 September, Michael took part in the Reading Triathlon 2017 and raised a whooping total of £1000, that is 100% of his target!  So, our warmest congratulations to Michael for this amazing result!

Training and competing in any sporting event is physically and mentally challenging, yet exhilarating. More so, if you are doing it for a cause you passionately believe in.  Here is a flavour of what it meant for Michael:

Training twice a day, six days a week for nine weeks

I’m a very  active person and I was looking for a challenge, both mental and physical to keep me occupied.  At the same time I realised I could also fundraise for CAFOD.  I specifically chose CAFOD’s Syria Crisis Appeal as this war  saddens me deeply. I feel very privileged to have good heath, a safe home and endless opportunities, so I felt compelled to raise awareness of the crisis through fundraising.

The triathlon was an immense challenge for Michael, training twice a day doing at least 3 hours of strenuous exercise!  On the day itself, he was very nervous but had amazing support from his Mum, Dad, little brother Philip, Auntie Christina and Uncle Paul.  They cheered for him at every stage of the race, and he competed in all stages with a big smile on his face.

Michael commented, “My dad funded all my training, bike hire and gear. My mum made sure I ate like a king, with the most nutritional meals prepared every day. I definitely couldn’t have done this without my family. Everyone that donated and supported me gave me the confidence to train harder and I am forever grateful for the support!”

Michael finished 43rd out of 103 in his age category.  An impressive result, which undoubtedly could not have been achieved without Michael’s family and friends who supported him spiritually, emotionally and financially, giving him the confidence and strength to make it to the finish line.

At the finish line with my medal, exhausted but so happy with the result!

“I should be saying I’m glad it’s over but the truth is I don’t know what to do with myself now! This experience has been one of the best things I’ve ever done, I had so much fun, and felt privileged to raise money for CAFOD and such a worthy cause. I would definitely do it again! Fr Kevin has said he’ll join me for the next triathlon!”

Big cheers all around for you Michael !  and a huge thanks to all those who made possible this achievement!
